“Botanical gardens, sunsets, awesome live music, friends and fun!”
That’s my memories of Sunset Sounds music festival.
When it comes to music festivals in January in Qld, you usually spend a full day in the sun and near die from heat exhaustion (yeh, I’m talking to you Big Day Out…).
Not so with Sunset Sounds! Not only is it within the shady Botanical Gardens & Riverstage, but it’s also an afternoon start, so you’re listening to music just as the sun is setting (I’ll take a stab that’s how it got it’s name!).

It’s also held the first week of the year, when you’re heading back to work (or are still on Uni holidays) after the Xmas / New Year debarcle. You’ve got low motivation for work and high motivation to continue the holidaying & partying.
The Sunset Sounds line-up
The 2011 lineup is looking awesome.
- Interpol
- Joan Jett & The Blackbirds
- Klaxons
- Peaches (DJ set)
- Cold War Kids
- Paul Kelly
- LadyHawke
- The Living End
- Ash Grunwald
- Children Collide
- Angus & Julia Stone
- Tame Impala
blah blah blah… Lots more spread over the two glorious evenings. I don’t want to tease any further.
So I ask you, “Why WOULDN’T you want to go?!”

Did I mention, it’s also falls on my partner’s birthday. It’s like they put on a whole festival for him. Sweeeeet!
Oh, and if you join Sunset Sounds on Facebook, you can download singles from some of the upcoming festivals’ artists – for free!

Fireforks, culture, dancing, food – live music and fun!
It’s Festival time in Brissy, with three weeks or live entertainment, fireworks and fun getting underway this weekend, at venues all across Brisbane.
Some free, some paid, something for everyone!
Live Music Galore
If it’s live music you’re after, the party’s getting started in the The Spiegeltent, King George Square.
With a line-up of the funkiest live music, a pumping Garden Bar and the best party atmosphere in town, The Spiegeltent opening night is a fitting start to three weeks of Festival fever.”
7pm shows in The Spiegeltent
All events in The Spiegeltent are ticketed, including the Opening Night, 8pm Sat 4 September, which also coincides with Riverfire (kicking off just after the fireworks), and the first Brissy show of Powderfinger’s last ever tour.
Over the three weeks, see artists like:
- Paul Dempsey on 5 Sep, 6 Sep, 7 Sep
- Dan Kelly on 9 Sep
- Old Man River on 12 Sep
- Ed Kuepper 0n 15 Sep
- and loads more…
For more info on what’s happening at The Spiegeltent and throughout the Festival, see the Brisbane Festival website.
