Ash Grunwald has been sharing his amazing talent and music with us for about 10 years. A lot of that time has been spent on the road.
Hot Mama Vibes, the album Ash released last year was his fifth studio album. Singles include ‘Walking‘ – which recently appeared on the soundtrack for the Robert De Niro & Bradley Cooper blockbuster, Limitless (go Ash!!), ‘Lady Luck‘ and newest single ‘Tear The Roof Off‘.
Mixing electronica with the blues was always a dream of mine,” said Grunwald. “On the first album I was really trying to strip it back to raw elements, just be as soulful as possible. I guess every album since then has been a gradual move towards this point.” “It’s not something I would have put out there in the past. I would have constrained myself; I wouldn’t have felt comfortable. This is my fifth album so it was time to just launch in there, do whatever I felt like.”
Anyone who knows of Ash, knows he also loves his surfing. So mixing his passions of music, surf and art, he is filming a documentary about life on the road, the “Road Dog Diaries”.
I’ve always wanted to document the contrasts between the places I tour in Australia. This tour will see us visiting deserts, snowfields, cities and of course, hugging the coast from Torquay to Noosa. There’s so many characters that I’ve met along my travels and we’ve organized to hook up with someone interesting at each show. By the end of the tour we will have surfed, snowboarded and skated our way around the country whilst jamming with amazing musos every night. We’re all pretty exited about it!”
Ash will also be calling on your local knowledge before he gets to your town, he wants to know who your talented surf photographers and film makers are, and most importantly where the best waves are. Keep your eyes peeled on Ash’s Facebook, or follow Ash on Twitter for announcements.

‘Gurge putting out new tunes in new ways
I think it has been at least 9 years since I first dragged my boyfriend kicking and screaming (just a little) to a Regurgitator show at Shepherd’s Bush in London. Little did he know it was to be the first of many gigs I would drag him along to. At least, these days he actually enjoys live music. Back then, he was just trying to get to ‘get to know me’…
And thankfully, the ‘Gurge did not disappoint. Just like any time I have seen them play.
The Brisbane crew go a lot further back than 9 years though, winning their first ARIA awards in 1996 with their first full-length album, Tu Plang. Both that album and their next, Unit, made Triple J’s Hottest 100 albums of all time (at # 44 and 10 respectively).
Superhappyfuntimesfriends or Superhappyfuntimefriends
Is it a typo? or?
Their latest album, Superhappyfuntime(s)friends, may or may not have 2x s in it, but either way is due out 5 August.
They did previously suggest they wouldn’t be putting out their music in a full traditional album format again, and although you will be able to get it in CD format, plus vinyl and digital download, they’ve thrown a couple of interesting little curve balls in too.
You can buy it on cassette. Ok, cool. A little different, BUT you can also buy it on pin. Yep – a colourful, wearable badge or pin, approx 2cm across, that you can plug your earphones into. Complete with EQ and all. Even if just for keepsake value, it’s worth checking out. For shizzle!
Do you ‘like their old stuff better than their new stuff’?
Here’s a taster. “One stand-out song, All Fake Everything, starts off like an Imagine-esque lament to the bad luck of rappers, before switching into a blazing hip-hop track.”
